Breaking romance news: Love is real, and ESPN's ESPY Awards are where you can find it.
Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in history and a suspected human-shark hybrid, is also, we're finding out, a super-sweet husband to his longtime love, Nicole Michele Phelps (née Johnson). At least, that's the impression we got from his speech at last night's 2017 ESPY Awards, held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. When Phelps took the stage to accept the award for Best Record-Breaking Performance (for all those Olympic medals, natch), he shouted out his wife while grinning from ear to ear, saying:
"Today is my wife's birthday, and we met here 10 years ago. It's the most amazing thing in the world."
The ESPYs attract major sports stars like Lindsey Vonn, Kerri Walsh-Jennings, Stephen Curry, and Simone Biles, all of whom were in attendance, but Michael only had eyes for Nicole.
He later posted a sweet happy-birthday message on Instagram with a picture of the two of them and the caption "Happy bday to my best friend and love of my life!!! Two days ago we celebrated our 10 year anniversary of meeting at the #espys !! #yourethebest #happybday #happiness"
Nicole is no stranger to fierce competition; she was crowned Miss California in 2010. She also holds a degree in communications with a concentration in sports and entertainment (how appropriate!) from the University of Southern California.
She and Michael Phelps did indeed meet at the 2007 ESPY Awards, and after becoming engaged in February 2015, they were married (in secret!) in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, last year. The bride wore a Julie Vino Bridal bustier and skirt.
They are the parents of one son, Boomer, who already has his own Instagram account, thanks to his social-media-savvy mom and dad. He's already something of a swim star and got to meet Olympian Katie Ledecky. This whole family gets a gold medal.
