Michael Phelps won 22 medals of all different colors during his three Summer Olympics appearances, but the gold he had this weekend was perhaps the most meaningful of all. The much-celebrated swimmer took the plunge and got engaged to his girlfriend, former Miss California Nicole Johnson!
Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in history, announced the exciting news on his Instagram account with a photo of him and Johnson cuddling in the snow on early Sunday morning. "She said yes," he captioned the adorable picture. Johnson, his on-and-off girlfriend of several years, posted the same photo with the caption, "I'm gonna be a Mrs." From what we can tell, her engagement ring has an enormous center stone.
Their photos naturally got a lot of love on social media, where well wishes came pouring. One of particular note? Hilary Phelps, Michael's sister, wrote an effusive Facebook post that absolutely warmed our hearts. "CONGRATULATIONS to these two lovebirds on their engagement! Couldn't be happier for my brother and thrilled to gain a sister, who I adore and love already!" she wrote.
The engagement is a much needed bright spot for Phelps — he's at the tail-end of a six-month suspension from USA Swimming that started after his second drunk-driving arrest. Once that ends, he plans to start preparing for competitions where he can add to his enormous collection of awards. If nothing else, we know one thing to be true: Wedding planning is the best distraction there is!
