"The seaweed is always greener in somebody else's lake"—unless you're Cammy Rynae Cuoco, who contends her mermaid proposal was "perfect." Her story actually involves two wedding proposals, two engagement rings, and one glorious bespoke red and gold sequined tail.
Fiancé Eric Martinez (aww, as in The Little Mermaid's Prince Eric! Cue the sappy grins.) made the ask on June 8 during the couple's vacation in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Knowing Del Sol Photography was Cuoco's favorite photo company, he'd planned a surprise jungle photo shoot that finished in a cave exactly opposite from that horrifying one in The Descent. There, he bent the knee.
But Martinez needed more than a cave. He told photographer Polly Dawson he wanted "crazy."
"A proposal is a fairy-tale moment," Dawson writes on her site. "Let’s play with that idea! If a mermaid is Cammy’s 'spirit animal,' she should be proposed to as a mermaid!"
So after establishing they were a sure thing on shore, Martinez asked Cuoco for another go-around, this time under the sea. (Or, more specifically, in a cenote, which is a fancy word for a natural swimming hole.)
"My favorite princess was always Ariel,” Cammy told HuffPost. “Mermaids are magical and get to explore the vast depths of the sea."
Obviously, she was down. And even more so when Dawson whipped out the tail she'd made herself and a matching red and gold ring pop.
"I cannot believe you made that,” Cuoco says in Photography Del Sol's exclusive behind-the-scenes video. Dawson confessed to Insta-stalking Cuoco to guesstimate size and just crossing her fingers it would fit.
The final upscale came in the form of literal scaling. "Editing the underwater pictures so Cammy looks like a 'real' mermaid [was] my final surprise for her and Eric," Dawson writes. "I bling-ed the ring pop and got to thinking, why not embrace the power of Photoshop and go 'full mermaid'? Bye-bye, bikini and hello, mermaid scales!"
Cuoco admitted to HuffPost that the "frigid" shoot was "crazy-hard," especially paired with a tequila hangover. ("The things we do to look like mermaids,” jokes Dawson in the video.) But Cuoco's final notes were "Amazing—the most fun ever. I got to be a mermaid for a day."
