When Meghan Markle and Prince Harry gave their first joint interview as a newly engaged couple, they revealed an important detail about how they initially met. According to Prince Harry, they were introduced by a mutual friend, who played matchmaker before they went on two back-to-back dates in London.
"It was definitely a set-up," Markle said in the same interview. "It was a blind date."
While they both said they wanted to protect her privacy, the friend's identity eventually leaked out in the press. It turns out the woman who brought the Duke and Duchess of Sussex together was a childhood pal of Prince Harry's named Violet von Westenholz. Now, she's reportedly pregnant with her first child, and, according to the Daily Mail, lots of royal insiders are speculating that she's planning on asking the royal pair to be the godparents to her future baby.
None of this is confirmed, of course, but the couple does seem to have a close relationship with von Westenholz. The daughter of former Olympic skier Baron Piers von Westenholz, she spent a ton of time with Prince Harry as a kid. She reportedly met Markle later, while working as a public relations director for Ralph Lauren. The two of them had been photographed together at Wimbledon in 2017, right around the time people think that Markle and Prince Harry went on their first date.
There has also been speculation that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could even ask von Westenholz herself to be a godparent to their new baby, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. Other rumored candidates for the special honor include Serena Williams, the tennis champion and close friend of Markle's who planned her extravagant NYC baby shower, or her longtime BFFL, celebrity stylist Jessica Mulroney. It'll take some time before any of the rumors are confirmed, but it's clear the royals have a tight network of friends—or even family in the form of Kate Middleton and Prince William—to choose from.
