In the first of what will undoubtedly be many British/American summits this weekend, Meghan Markle's mom, Doria Ragland, spent the afternoon with Prince Harry's dad and stepmother ahead of the royal wedding.
Doria Ragland joined Prince Charles and Camilla Bowles for tea at Clarence House on Wednesday afternoon, marking the first time the soon-to-be in-laws have ever met, People reports. This is likely one of the first things Ragland did after arriving in London (aside from unpacking her Burberry wardrobe), and she will reportedly have the chance to meet the queen before her daughter becomes a member of the royal family.
While Ragland is getting to know Markle's new family in the U.K., the actress' father, Thomas Markle, will remain stateside. He was recently embroiled in a paparazzi scandal and suffered a heart attack for which he now must undergo surgery, meaning he won't be able to attend the wedding. On Thursday, Markle issued a statement regarding the situation through Kensington Palace, further instigating rumors that Ragland will accompany her daughter down the aisle.
“Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding," she said in the statement. I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health.” She continued, “I would like to thank everyone who has offered generous messages of support. Please know how much Harry and I look forward to sharing our special day with you on Saturday.”
Despite all of the drama surrounding their big day, Meghan and Harry looked every bit the bride- and groom-to-be when they arrived at Windsor Castle on Thursday. Prince Harry has already stepped into the role of dutiful husband, and is reportedly working overtime to protect his future wife, with everything going on. “Harry is super protective over Meghan and isn’t happy unless she is happy,” a source told Us Weekly. “Any time there is or has been negative press about Meghan, he always blows it off and acts as though it’s them two against the world."
