On the day of the royal wedding, it was hard not to feel emotional looking at Meghan Markle's mom, Doria Ragland. Not only did she look endlessly chic in her Oscar de la Renta suit, which she paired with her signature locs and nose ring, but she was also beaming with pride as she watched her daughter become a royal. When Ragland cried tears of joy, so did the rest of us, making it abundantly clear just how special the bond between the two women really is. And, according to Markle's makeup artist Daniel Martin, the Duchess of Sussex largely has her mother to thank for the woman she is today.
"Meghan draws a lot of strength from her mother," Martin, who was responsible for the bride's natural wedding day glam, told People this week. "Doria is classy, chic, and confident, but not unapproachable." Sound familiar, or what? Another unnamed royal family friend, who met Ragland on the day of the royal wedding, told People that Markle's mother shares her grace under pressure. "She has a softness, but I detected a steely core to her," the source said. "She has come through a hell of a lot."
For their part, Markle and Prince Harry have made it clear just how greatly they appreciate the effect that Ragland has had on their lives. In her speech at the royal wedding, the Duchess reportedly spoke directly to her mom, saying, "You have always been there for me through everything." In their post-engagement interview in November, Harry, too, spoke highly of Ragland, saying, "She's amazing!" And in his own wedding speech he reportedly noted that Ragland is "one in a million," just like her daughter.
Though Ragland has already returned to her home in California after the royal wedding, while her daughter is now permanently settled in London to fulfill, you know, the duties of being a literal princess, Markle will undoubtedly exude the strength she's drawn from her mother through it all.
