Meghan Markle may be about to partake in the biggest party of her life when she weds Prince Harry on Saturday, but the actress was on the receiving end of a different sort of extravaganza this past weekend, thanks to her high school, Immaculate Heart in Los Angeles, California. Her alma mater threw a pre-wedding party in honor of their former student's impending royal nuptials.
Per The Telegraph, nearly all of the school's students turned up on Saturday—a feat within itself, willingly going to school on the weekend—to celebrate their most famous alumna, which consisted of a fancy tea party. There were crumpets! There were fancy hats! There was, well, tea! "I will be watching every moment of the royal wedding in real time," Maria Pollia, an old teacher and mentor to Markle, told The Telegraph. And that's not all: The school loves Markle so much that they're even going to throw her another party on the big wedding day, which will begin at 3:30 a.m.
This pre-wedding jubilee comes at an opportune time for a positive royal distraction, as Markle has been plagued by multiple controversies regarding her father over the past few days. After it was unearthed this past weekend that Markle's dad, Thomas Markle, was working hand-in-hand with a paparazzo to stage flattering (and dare we say, adorable) photos of himself to sell to the press, he decided to withdraw from attending his daughter's wedding in order to avoid causing her any embarrassment. He also reportedly suffered a recent heart attack.
"This is a deeply personal moment for Ms. Markle in the days before her wedding," a Kensington Palace spokesman said in a statement in the aftermath. "She and Prince Harry ask again for understanding and respect to be extended to Mr. Markle in this difficult situation." However, the father of the bride seems to have reversed course a day later, only to change his mind again on Tuesday afternoon, owing to the fact he now requires emergency open heart surgery. And you thought the Windsors were dramatic, eh?
