Wedding date? Check! Venue? Check! The plans for the royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle seem to all be falling into place. What's the latest big-day detail crossed off the royal to-do list? Reportedly, Meghan Markle has crowned a maid of honor!
Being asked to serve as maid of honor in anyone’s wedding is, well, an honor! Being asked to serve as maid of honor in the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle with millions watching? Well, that’s a regal recognition that’ll go down in history. So, when the royal duo first announced their engagement, we could only imagine all of the future duchess’s friends would be clamoring for the spot.
But alas, a victor has reportedly already been chosen for the top spot in Markle’s bridal party. In a departure from royal wedding tradition, a source tells Us Weekly, the bride-to-be has named a maid of honor—not a “chief bridesmaid,” as is customary—for her upcoming nuptials.
“The day of the wedding itself will certainly hold a few unconventional surprises. Don’t expect a royal wedding by numbers. They want to involve their friends and family as much as possible throughout the day,” the source divulged.
Rumors that Markle wants to break with tradition and have her mother walk her down the aisle on the big day have been circulating. Now, this source is also claiming that Markle’s unconventional choices (at least according to the queen!) extend to her bridal party as well. “While it is very much a British wedding, expect a few American touches too,” the source told Us Weekly. “She’s not picked a chief bridesmaid, she’s chosen a maid of honor.”
Now that we know there’ll be a possible Pippa Middleton moment on the horizon at this royal wedding, we have one question.
Who’s the lucky lady?! Previously, we predicted that some of Markle’s besties like Serena Williams, Priyanka Chopra, and Jessica Mulroney could all be in the running for the actress’s bridal party, making them all possible candidates for the maid-of-honor title.
May 19 can’t come soon enough: We can’t wait to see who scores the maid-of-honor crown!
