On Monday morning, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their royal engagement. Since the big news broke, we’ve all been obsessed with knowing every detail of the couple's new life together. While both of their lives are about to change in big ways, the bride-to-be is making some major changes herself—one being giving up her six-year career on Suits. But according to Suits creator Aaron Korsh, this news comes as no surprise.
“I knew from a year ago that this relationship was burgeoning,” Korsh said of Markle’s departure from the show in an interview on U.K. radio show Today on Radio 4. “And I had a decision to make because I didn’t want to intrude and ask her, ‘Hey, what’s going on and what are you going to do?’ So collectively with the writers, we decided to take a gamble that these two people were in love and it was going to work out.”
Korsh said that planning for Markle’s potential exit and not going through with it would be an easier plot to undo than not planning for it and then unexpectedly losing a cast member.
“What we decided to do (was to) say, ‘Look, I would rather have good things happen to Meghan in her life,’ which would likely mean her leaving the show,” he added. “So let’s plan on that and it’s much easier to undo that, if it came to it, than to just plan on her staying forever and then finding out she’s going to go.”
The creator also had some kind words to say about his coworker’s engagement. Korsh said that Markle would fit in naturally with the royal family and that her relationship with Harry is “like a fairy tale.”
