Keeping up with the royal hairdos might become a lot easier if this trend is to be believed.
Appearing at an official royal visit in Cardiff earlier this week, Meghan Markle subtly confirmed what will likely become her go-to beauty look while hanging with the Windsors going forward: A casual, messy bun, similar to what she sported last week. It's pretty much what you might be rockin' at your cubicle while hunched over your sad desk salad, to be honest — parted in the middle, a few flyaway pieces cascading over the ears, and an imperfect bun with teased crown. Still, Markle makes it looks fabulous, especially coupled with her chic monochromatic coats and well-tailored dresses to round out the ensemble.
The concept of a "royal messy bun" might seem silly to think about in terms of its contempt for royal hair protocol, but think about it — when was the last time you've seen the traditionalist-leaning Kate Middleton or Camilla Parker Bowles don such a casual look in favor of glossy blowouts or formal updos? It's so unusual, in fact, that Markle's messy bun preferences are actually quite groundbreaking for the Windsors, as the hairstyle might've been considered a breach in appearance. (No joke.) In fact, the royals aren't exactly known for adapting well to aesthetic change, as evidenced by things so banal as eschewing red nail polish and never crossing their legs while in public. There's a reason Queen Elizabeth has been wearing the same nail polish since the '80s, and this may be why.
It's doubtful the Queen herself will ever experiment with such a messy bun look, but who's to say for sure in 2018?
