Reports of Meghan Markle's royal protocol–breaking ways are, in fact, slightly exaggerated. The Duchess of Sussex may be rocking messy buns left and right, but she's still curtsying to the Queen, OK? On Saturday, the royal wedding finally happened, and while most of us were content with poring over every angle of Markle's stunning Givenchy wedding dress and checking out Idris Elba and David Beckham, some not-so-eagle-eyed viewers were freaking out over a supposed flub. Said flub apparently involved the new duchess not curtsying to Queen Elizabeth II.
But as news reports by Time, Page Six, and elsewhere show, this was simply not the case. Markle did, in fact, curtsy to the queen, as tradition, and there's video evidence to prove it. Royal enthusiast Moniek Bloks, assistant editor of Royal Central and owner of the History of Royal Women blog, has captured the exact moment on Twitter. As Bloks helpfully explains in the caption, the mix-up about Markle's curtsy is all because of a...creative choice by the royal wedding videographer: "Here is the bow/curtsy, which you can barely see because some genius decided on a wide shot. #royalwedding."
So there you go: Meghan Markle curtsied to the Queen, the moment was captured for posterity on quasi-HD footage, and we can all go back to worrying about more important things, like how someone could have mistaken Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, for Ginger Spice, exactly what Meghan Markle said in her reception speech, and how Meghan and Harry managed to look so darn perfect in their official wedding portraits.
