By 2006, Matthew McConaughey was already a household name, thanks to more than a decade's worth of appearances in films such as Dazed and Confused, A Time to Kill, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Despite this professional success, however, the actor was still feeling somewhat unfulfilled in his personal life—until he met now-wife Camila Alves at a Los Angeles nightclub that year. In the July/August 2018 issue of Cigar Aficionado, McConaughey says Alves walked into his life at the perfect time.
"I mean, the clock was ticking—I was about to be 40, and my plan was to be married and have kids by that age," he told the magazine, according to Entertainment Tonight. "But I didn't want to play the game of starting to feel anxious, because, with too much anxiety, you can't find a mate. And then you make a hasty decision. I knew men who had made hasty decisions and women who had done the same thing. But at that point, I wasn't hunting. And then this amazing woman walked across my field of vision, and I thought, 'Who is that?' And it was Camila."
The pair began dating soon after, and they tied the knot several years later, in a backyard ceremony at their home in Austin, in June 2012. McConaughey, 48, and Alves, 36, are now parents to 9-year-old son Levi, 8-year-old daughter Vida, and 5-year-old son Livingston.
The Oscar winner previously shared the story of his magical first encounter with Alves in an interview with People, back in 2016. "Out of the corner of my eye, this sort of aqua-green figure went floating across the frame about 20 feet in front of me. My eye went up and I remember what came out of my mouth. I didn't say, 'Who is that?' I went, 'What is that?'" he recalled of spotting Alves across the club. "As l was trying to get that's attention across the room, I went in my head, 'This is not the kind of woman you call over across the room, McConaughey.
Get your ass out of your chair and go get her.' Which I did." And the rest, as they say, is history.
