Tossing anything that reminds you of your ex is a cathartic component of the breakup process. But, for singer/songwriter Mariah Carey, this post-breakup phase was a full two years in the making—she just now parted ways with her engagement ring from former fiancé, Australian billionaire James Packer. But, when it's 35 carats with a rumored $10 million price tag, we understand why it might take some time to say goodbye to this gem forever.
Packer popped the question in January 2016, but the two called it quits the following October. Cue Carey dramatically burning her wedding dress on-camera via a music video and a massive financial settlement between the former couple, which allowed MiMi to keep the sparkler that she continued to wear after the breakup—until now, that is.
According to Page Six, Carey's business manager discreetly sold the gigantic bauble to a jeweler in Los Angeles for a cool $2.1 million. Although it's a far cry from the ring's estimated face value, at least the "We Belong Together" singer made a profit! But, why relinquish the jewel now?
"Mariah has been very vocal recently about her choice to move forward in her life surrounded by positivity," Carey's publicist told Page Six. "That requires leaving emotional and material baggage behind, including an old engagement ring from an ex-boyfriend." Valid.
In case you're trying to get your hands on the Mariah's World star's former engagement sparkler, good luck. "A confidentiality agreement was signed, but the jeweler is currently selling it, and there’s only one such ring," a source said. "Mariah Carey’s public relations people are desperately trying to keep the story from the press, and have threatened the jeweler with litigation if he discloses her name."
Carey was formally married to record producer Tommy Mottola in 1993, then tied the knot with Nick Cannon in 2008. Although the third time unfortunately wasn't the charm, it seems MiMi is finally taking the necessary steps to fully move on. Who needs a 35-carat ring lying around, anyway?
