How exactly does one tell pop diva Mariah Carey "We Belong Together?" With a larger-than-life 35-carat diamond ring, of course! The news just broke that Carey and her Australian billionaire boyfriend, James Packer, are officially engaged and her new super-sized sparkler is just as insane as the singer's impressive pipes.
Thursday night, Packer popped the question in New York City with a diamond that we're pretty sure could be seen from New Jersey. Scratch that, that rock could be seen from space. The Daily Mail estimates that the ring set Packer back a cool $7.5 million (just a casual credit card swipe for reportedly the third richest man in Australia, we're sure...) and, as Vogue points out, the diamond's carat count tops even Elizabeth Taylor's famed 33-carat ring from Richard Burton. Move over, Kim K (with your measly 15-carat ring)! There's a new super sparkler in Tinsel Town.
The enormous emerald-cut rock comes from luxury jewelry designer Wilfredo Rosado, a close friend of Carey's and Packer's top pick when it came to creating the pricey piece for his love. "I took the standards super high, and I wanted to create a ring that could not be measured up to," Rosado explained to Vogue. "This is the most challenging piece of jewelry I've ever designed. I wanted to create the most gorgeous ring for my dear friend, but I also wanted to create the most stunning ring for one of the most iconic divas of our generation," he continued. Trust us, Rosado, this has got to be the most diva-licious rings we've ever seen.
Besides the colossal center stone, Mariah's bauble also features tapered baguette diamonds sitting along the platinum band. (Because, of course it does.) "For me, it was super stressful," Rosado said of his design process. "I didn't want to fail her." Jewelry is a life or death situation, after all.
"What is really most interesting about the ring are the proportions," notes the designer. "The stone is so large, but we were able to create a beautiful balance with the overall simplicity of the design," says Rosado. Uh huh, yeah, very simple...
At the end of the day, there's really only one way to sum that engagement sparkler: "It is epic," Rosado said. "It's an epic ring for an epic time in her life."
