Mamma Mia! —Inspired Honeymoon Itinerary

Take a chance on these movie-worthy destinations

Updated 10/15/17

Based on the catchy and upbeat songs of iconic ABBA, Mamma Mia! had its first start as a musical in 1999. Fast forward nine years later, it was released as a major motion picture that stole the hearts (and ears) of many.

Its star-studded cast includes Amanda Seyfriend, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgard, and Colin Firth, it takes place in picturesque Greece, and it features the crazy moments and events that surround Sophie’s (played by Seyfried) upcoming wedding. Unbeknownst to her mother (Streep), she’s invited three men to her wedding, of whom one, she believes, is her father. Shenanigans ensue when Sam (Bronsan), Bill (Skarsgard) and Harry (Firth) arrive and the wedding fast approaches.

Throughout the film, viewers are treated to gorgeous scenery and incredible insights into Grecian culture, making it the perfect film to inspire a romantic and exotic honeymoon. Here, check out our Mamma Mia! inspired itinerary.

Where to Go

Pack your bags and head to Greece, but remember that Kalokairi is in fact a fictional town. In real life, the island used for shooting is that of Skopelos, nestled in the crystal blue Aegean Sea. Also known as “The Green and Blue Island,” this treasured island is a hotspot for tourism and ideal for honeymooners. To arrive, you’ll have to take a ferry or private boat, as the island doesn’t have an airport. Don’t worry, the island being the “greenest” with over 50% of land covered in pine forest more than makes up for it.

Kastani Bay and Beach, home of the cougar-iffic “Does Your Mother Know” scene, is uniquely surrounded by pine trees and provides a breathtaking setting for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing. Head to the Kastani Beach Bar in-between dips for refreshing cocktails.

While in town, be sure to stop by the church of Agios Iohannis Kastri where the wedding procession (or almost wedding procession—#spoileralert) takes place. Located within Skopelos, the small church is nestled high on a rock, and is accessible through steps carved into the rock side. Beautiful inside and out, the church is a must-see for any Mamma Mia! fan, or sightseer.

Where to Stay

When it’s time to settle in, call the Skopelos Village Hotel home, just like the cast and crew did during filming. Family run for 30 years, the hotel offers spacious two bedroom suites, modern Sea Breeze suites, and junior suites and double rooms, great for any budget or style. Bar-Restaurant Agiolo onsite is a fantastic place to grab fresh Grecian bites and Skopelian treats complimented by a glass of wine, or a cocktail.

Within the city limits, there are also ample apartments and villas for rent from owners in town. On Airbnb.com, those that appear to be what honeymoon dreams are made of include the Eleonas Pool Villa, the Villa Karavos, and the incredibly opulent 5 bedroom Villa Milma, which boasts a secluded setting and breathtaking panoramic views within its three story, traditional estate.

What to Eat and Drink

Be sure to wear your comfiest dress or stretchy shorts, and prepare to eat ample amounts of fresh seafood, poultry and produce while on your Grecian getaway in Skopelos. One of the most well-known restaurants along the Aegean Sea, Agnanti proudly serves traditional homemade dishes crafted from family recipes. Enjoy dining al fresco amongst storybook scenery as you sample all the restaurant has to offer.

Freshly prepared fish, octopus and appetizers are only a few of the delectable offerings to choose from at Taverna Pavlos, a traditional taverna where you can enjoy a sunset dinner or beachside lunch while sipping ample amounts of their house wine. For a cozy yet romantic dinner spent amongst flowing palm trees and tucked a bit off the beaten path, Anna’s Restaurant offers classic Greek dishes, with a twist. A local favorite, they also feature live music and singing some evenings, making it the perfect spot for a romantic date night.
