Lena Dunham has commented on many occasions about her plans to eventually marry longtime boyfriend Jack Antonoff, so fans are constantly on the lookout for clues that might indicate the couple has secretly tied the knot. When Dunham referred to Antonoff's sister as her "sister in law" in an Instagram post on Monday, the comments section blew up, obviously.
"My sister in law @rachelantonoff made this dress. As a designer she has more wit, style and political awareness than anyone in the game," Dunham captioned the shot of herself in an off-white linen dress. "Pretty lucky she's in my family and required to dress me in fine fine linen. This art teacher chic look has me ready for a week of macaroni necklaces and protest!"
Numerous followers sounded off in the comments section, demanding to know if the phrase "sister in law" was meant to imply anything. "SIL? Does this mean???" asked one commenter. "I've called her that for years:) no ring 💍," Dunham responded to the user, clearing things up. Well, that's that!
Dunham and Antonoff celebrated five years together in April. Over the past half decade, the Girls actress has spoken about their future together on multiple occasions. In a 2015 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Dunham explained why she wouldn't be getting married until marriage equality became a nationwide right. "Well, it's something that…the idea of having a celebration that can't be fully shared among all the people in my life and all the people that we love just doesn't really feel like a celebration at all," Dunham told DeGeneres. "So, until that's something that everyone can join into with no sense of being left out on any level, politically, emotionally, it's just not something that we're gonna do," she concluded.
When the Supreme Court ruled same-sex marriage constitutional later that year, Dunham jokingly tweeted at her boyfriend, "Get on it, yo…" A few weeks later, she opened up further on the topic in an essay for The New Yorker. So although Dunham is not quite ready to say "I do," she seems to be happy to keep her fans posted.
