Lea Michele announced months before her wedding that she had found the One—her wedding dress that is—but she kept the details top secret. Now the actress is telling all about the showstopping Monique Lhuillier gowns—there were two!—that she rocked on her big day.
Michele married Zandy Reich on March 9 in Northern California. The romantic, floral-filled setting was the perfect backdrop for her elegant ceremony dress, The Luna gown from Lhuillier's spring 2019 collection. The strapless gown featured a structural sweetheart neckline, hand-tufted skirt, and a silk gazar draped over the corset-style bodice.
“My dress is very classic, which was very important to me,” Michele tells People. “It’s important to [Zandy and me] that we look back on our photos, and that they’re classic. I wanted to stay away from a lot of current trends.”
To complete her timeless look, she styled the dress with a cathedral-length veil made from hand-appliquéd lace and a pair of Neil Lane pear-shaped diamond and platinum earrings.
Michele has a long-standing relationship with Lhuillier—she has worn her gowns on many red carpets. Being the millennial bride she is, Michele first discovered the wedding dress on Instagram and immediately knew it was the one. “I’d seen a dress on [the brand’s] Instagram from the spring 2019 collection—The Luna—and I was like, ‘That’s my wedding dress,’” she said.
Despite her gut feeling that The Luna would be her wedding dress, she went dress shopping with her stylist Brad Goreski and her mom to try on a bunch of other gowns, saving the best for last. “Monique is so beautiful, and so talented and she let me try on every single dress,” Michele said. “But the last one I tried on was that one that I saw online and I absolutely loved it. In the entire wedding process, that was one of my most favorite moments, being at that fitting with Brad, and with my mom, and letting my mom see me wearing my wedding dress for the first time was so magical.”
Once she had the dress on, Michele gave the telltale sign of a bride who just found her wedding dress. “Once she put it on, we knew,” Lhuillier told People. “Joyful tears followed.”
We imagine she had the same reaction when she tried on her reception dress. The actress strayed a bit from her classic look with a more daring reception dress. She donned another Lhuillier frock for the occasion, but this one was an all-over lace, long-sleeve mini dress with a deep-V neckline.
“For the dancing dress after the reception, Monique Lhuillier made this amazing dress for me,” Michele told People. “From her new collection she has this very sexy, black mini dress with long sleeves, and she [made] it special for me, in white.”
Her custom dress was perfect for the reception where she and Reich danced to “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Haley Reinhart for their first dance. She also jammed out in the dress with her former Glee co-star and friend Darren Criss who performed at the wedding.
“I could definitely see myself putting that dress on from time to time, if I can fit into it after the wedding,” Michele said of the second look. “I just love it so much, and I will find an excuse to wear that dress, again and again.”
Even if it doesn't fit, Lhuillier would probably make time for alterations as she loves working with Michele.
“Working with Lea was an absolute dream,” Lhuillier told People. “I’ve had the pleasure of dressing her through the years, so when she asked me to design her wedding gown I was truly honored. Lea is a fashion girl and knows what works on her. She came with a vision and together we made it a reality.”
Maybe the two will collaborate down the line on a baby shower dress? Only time will tell!
