Lady Gaga Trades Her Engagement Ring for a Famous Diamond Necklace

Diamonds are a girl's best friend—even if they're not on a ring.

Lady Gaga proved that when she channeled Audrey Hepburn on the 2019 Oscars red carpet. In addition to the jaw-dropping black strapless Alexander McQueen gown she wore to the awards, the "Shallow" singer donned one of the most iconic pieces of jewelry in history: the 128.54-carat, 82-facets Tiffany & Co. diamond, appropriately named "the Tiffany diamond."

Recognize that massive rock? That's because you've seen it before: The stunning diamond necklace was last worn by Audrey Hepburn in 1962 for publicity posters for Breakfast at Tiffany's. This is the first time the necklace has been on the red carpet—and only the third time in history that it's ever been worn at all, according to W. Apparently, the necklace was worn by Mrs. Sheldon Whitehouse at the 1957 Tiffany Ball after it was first discovered in 1877 by Charles Lewis Tiffany in South Africa.

The lavish look comes just days after the Oscar-nominated actress broke off her engagement with talent agent Christian Carino. The couple announced their engagement in October 2018, when she called him her fiancé for the first time during an onstage speech. But four months later, during the 2019 Grammy Awards, the singer was spotted without her engagement ring. Fans speculated that the two might have broken off their engagement, and a few days later, the news was confirmed.

Despite her breakup, Gaga is unsurprisingly still killing it. The 32-year-old is nominated for two Oscars: best actress for her role as Ally in A Star Is Born and best original song for the movie's hit single, "Shallow."

Gaga opened up to Entertainment Tonight about the possibility of winning an Oscar.

"I haven’t really been able to fully process that," said Gaga. "It’s one of those things. You just never know what's going to happen. And the truth is, I’m just happy to be here in the presence of such incredible artists. I mean, so much talent in this room. And it's been my dream since I was a little girl that I would be able to, you know, even work as an actress, to work as a musician, to make it in this world, and I just can’t believe that I’m here and I'm very happy. My whole family is here with me."
