It's kind of hard to imagine Kristin Cavallari ever being single (which we never thought we'd say during her Laguna Beach days) now that she has three adorable kiddos to call her own and a doting husband who just so happens to be the hunky Chicago Bears quarterback. But as strong as the couple is today, it was quite a different story back before they were married.

In Cavallari's new book, Balancing in Heels: My Journey to Health, Happiness, and Making It All Work, she reveals the shocking details behind the engagement she broke off with Cutler in July 2011. After a year of dating, The Hills star broke up with the NFL pro after sensing things were a little "off," or as we like to call it, cold feet!

"I always go after what I want in life, with men or otherwise, and I never settle," Cavallari, 29, shared. "If something doesn't feel right, I act on it. It's just who I've always been."

Things between Cutler and Cavallari actually got so bad that the couple returned all of the wedding gifts they had received from friends and family two weeks after their break. But, Cavallari being the determined woman she is, knew it had to be done if there was ever to be a future between her and her now-hubby. "At that moment, something wasn't right," Cavallari wrote in her book. "A few things needed to change, and I knew the only way Jay would see how serious I was, was if I ended the relationship."

Apparently, according to her new book, one of the things that needed to change in the relationship was that Cavallari would not be content with being a stay-at-home mom. "If I stayed at home, I wouldn't be happy," the shoe designer speculates in her book. "And would probably end up resenting Jay for it."

As for what ended up saving their relationship, Cavallari credits the reconciliation with the couple's therapist. "She opened up our eyes to the other person's perspective and gave us great tools for communication...We still periodically see her to this day."

Thank goodness for open communication — the couple tied the knot in 2013 in a (what we assume to be) gorgeous Nashville wedding. Now parents to three precious kids, sons Camden, 3 and Jaxon, 22 months, and daughter Saylor, 3 months, the duo is stronger than ever. We couldn't be happier!
