Maintaining a healthy marriage is a lot of work, and this is true even for Hollywood couples. For example, just ask Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell. When their fun-loving relationship gets a little rocky, they turn to therapy to deal with tough times. Bell revealed the news about their using a marriage counselor during the premiere of CHiPS, a film adaptation of the NBC series. Surprisingly, therapy is the secret to their happy union.
“We have a very healthy marriage and we got there by doing therapy when we needed it, and constantly doing fierce moral inventories,” she said to People. “We both take responsibility when we are wrong, and I think it is easy to work with him because I married him, because I enjoy spending time with him and I trust him. That is exactly what I want in someone that I work with.”
Bell then recalled one of the first fights in their relationship. The pair argued over sharing a playlist during a cross-county motorcycle trip. “We were fighting about the first year of our relationship because it’s a power struggle, and we were fighting about the playlist, and I got so mad at him at one point that I refused to hold onto him,” she continued. “So I was on the back and just held onto the [bike] because I didn’t want to touch him.”
In 2015, Shepard was also candid about how they make their marriage work during an interview with Good Housekeeping. “I said to Kristen, ‘We should try hard to police ourselves about becoming contemptuous of each other,’” Shepard revealed. “If I ever see you roll your eyes at me, we need to hit pause and figure out what’s going on.’”
The couple were married in 2013, and have two daughters: Lincoln, 3, and Delta, 2.
