When you think of Kim Kardashian West, the word unfiltered doesn't exactly come to mind—she did, after all, send the Internet into a state of hysteria when she debuted a new seventies-inspired image filter on her Instagram posts last year. Actual filters aside, however, she and the rest of the family have built their empire partly on tightly controlling their image.
But at a recent appearance in Los Angeles on Saturday for the Create & Cultivate summit, a program gathering female entrepreneurs from across the U.S. to spark conversation around the various challenges working women face, the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star and businesswoman delivered a surprisingly candid talk (or, at least, surprisingly candid off-camera talk) on everything from how she's grown as an entrepreneur to how she got her kicks in reality television.
Between discussions of how to harness and "know your power" as a female CEO, influencer, or entrepreneur—and her least favorite moments of celebrityhood (like when she just wants "to go outside and eat a churro and not have everyone up my ass")—the 37-year-old reality star and beauty industry mogul pulled back the curtain on many different aspects of her life, both business-related and personal.
But perhaps the most intriguing of those was when Kardashian West revealed the moment she knew Kanye was The One. The tell? He, like Kim, loves to sleep with the heat on. She explained: "I sleep with the heat on...80 degrees and socks and a robe, every single night. The first night I slept at Kanye’s house…I won’t say the date because I’ll get in trouble, but years and years ago, he slept with the heat on and socks, and I was like, 'OMG, I met my soulmate.'”
So there you have it: The key to a fruitful and long-lasting relationship is apparently finding the one person who shares your thermostat settings. And if that isn't enough insight for you, Kardashian West ultimately rounded out her session by playing along as her BFF and panel interviewer, Allison Statter, asked her a few rapid-fire questions:
On ice cream versus frozen yogurt: “Ice cream. Cookies and cream. I had some today.”
On Beyoncé versus Rihanna: “I love both! And for different reasons. They’re both amazing, but I think they’re so different.”
On blond hair versus brown: “I wrote today that I’m so over blond hair, but I don’t know. I really love my blond moment, but I think I’m a brunette at heart. So brunette.”
On whether she'd rather get her hair or makeup done, if she had to choose one: “If I had to get it done, hair. I don’t know how to do hair. But I like makeup better.”
On whether she prefers sneakers or heels: “Honestly, I never thought in a million years I’d say sneakers. I didn’t own a pair legitimately unless it was a running shoe, and heels for life, but sneakers are up there. Yeezies.”
On Frozen versus Moana: “That’s so hard. Frozen. OK, OK….Wait, I just spoke about being true to myself. Frozen. But North dresses up as Moana all the time.”
And on reality television vs. scripted TV: “That’s the dumbest question. Reality TV.” But about her latest binge-watch, This Is Us. “I've watched the same pilot…. We gotta talk to whoever on that Direct[TV] [on-]demand. I’ve watched the pilot episode four times now to get to the end because you can’t rewind. So I’m only on the pilot.”
