At the height of engagement season during the winter holidays, Katy Perry and Russell Brand announced last weekend that they plan to divorce. Brand said in a statement to The Associated Press, "Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends." Despite their "irreconcilable differences," the pair may need that friendship more now than ever to weather the impending media storm—that is, if there's much of a storm to weather says David Caplan, a former celebrity-news editor at People and Star.
"Burying a celeb split over a holiday is a time-honored celeb tradition," Caplan told MTV News, "really kicked off by Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey back in the day, when they finally split and announced it the night before Thanksgiving. It's a smart tactical move on their end, as it gets buried a bit because of all the year-end news." But now that the 2012 news cycle is well into the grind, reports will no doubt surface in the coming days about what exactly went wrong in this seemingly happy celebrity marriage. —Phillip B. Crook
