Katherine McPhee’s happy engagement news was followed by tragedy, with the passing of her father just a few weeks later. In a new Instagram post she showed off her engagement ring for the first time and shared why it helps her remember her late father.
“It’s been a hard week,” the Waitress actress wrote in an Instagram caption Sunday, referring to the loss of her dad earlier that week. “Lots of tears but I want to thank my friends and family for all the love and support. My dad was so happy for me. My ring was the last thing I showed my dad before he passed and makes me smile when I look at this as a reminder of our last conversation.”
It sounds like McPhee’s dad was happy about her engagement to David Foster. The two were first linked to each other in May of 2017, but didn’t confirm their relationship until this year’s Met Gala, according to People. Foster reportedly popped the question during their vacation to Capri, Italy, earlier this month, but this is the first we are seeing of the ring.
“And now I’m ready to share with all of you what has been my sunshine amongst this painful loss,” McPhee continued. “My love wisely said to me the other day that 'death is the only thing that is 100 percent inevitable and the thing we are least prepared for.' So today we’re celebrating life and not forgetting love.”
McPhee spilled the details of the proposal and the ring, a sizable emerald-cut diamond with a halo of diamonds around it, to Jared Eng of JustJared.com, before the rest of the world. The former American Idol contestant shared a screenshot of their text message conversation where she revealed just how Foster proposed.
