Thanksgiving might be a quintessentially American holiday, but that doesn't mean we can't take dinner party-planning tips from one of our favorite British families. Whether you're an engaged pair, newlywed couple, or long-time married duo, Carole and Michael Middleton (yes, Kate's parents) are offering some sage advice on how to throw a thankful feast without a hitch.
"We love the sentiment behind this late autumn holiday which has in modern times become synonymous with spending precious time with friend and family to give thanks over meal — so we might just join in," a blog post for Party Pieces, the Middleton family company, said.
Among their top tips? Start with delicious cocktails and appetizers to keep your crowd happy since the main meal will likely be served later in the day. They suggest a signature cocktail, like a Thanksgiving punch that you can make in bulk ahead of time and guests can easily serve themselves. As for the meal, the Middleton's don't strictly hang their hat on turkey. "You might not want to go down the traditional Thanksgiving food route of enormous turkey with all the trimmings, so you could simply roast a turkey crown. Alternatively, go for the family's favorite roast and use turkey in one of the canapés instead," they say.
For décor, the Middleton's are proponents of a Thanksgiving-inspired tablecloth and accents, like pumpkins and turkeys, as well as a stars-and-stripes motif (how very diplomatic of them!). And, like any good party, they suggest ending the evening with something special and memorable, like indoor sparklers!
And, for the Middleton family, Thanksgiving isn't all about the food, drinks, and details. "Although you might not be able to sit down and watch an evening's worth of American football, settle down for a movie or play a board game together," they note.
So, whatever your plans are for this upcoming holiday, do as the Middleton's and remember to make the day special, about you and your family, and filled with a delicious meal!
