Shopping for your in-laws can be stressful for anyone. Before you freak out too much about what to get for your significant other's family, though, spare a thought for Kate Middleton, who isn't just shopping for her husband's grandmother. She's trying to find the perfect present for the actual Queen of England. But of course, the Duchess of Cambridge has already mastered the art of crafting a Christmas gift that's fit for a queen—and the pickiest possible in-law.
In an interview with U.K. television network ITV for the 2016 documentary Our Queen at Ninety that resurfaced this week, thanks to Elle U.K., the soon-to-be mother of three shares that, for the first Christmas she spent with the queen, in 2015, she decided to ditch the shopping bags completely and make the gift herself. "I was worried what to give the Queen as her Christmas present. I was thinking, 'Gosh, what should I give her?'" Middleton said. "And I thought back to what would I give my own grandparents. And I thought, 'I'll make her something.' Which could have gone horribly wrong. But I decided to make my granny's recipe of chutney." Middleton added that although she was "slightly worried" about her handmade gift, she noticed that the next day, QE2 had placed the chutney on the table. Um, we're going to need this magic in-law-charming chutney recipe ASAP, Kate!
Though there's no word yet on whether Middleton will be going DIY with presents again this year, she'll certainly have her hands full with two toddlers and another baby due in April. Perhaps the newest addition to the royal family, Prince Harry's fiancé Meghan Markle, will continue the homemade tradition instead.
Markle has already impressed at this year's royal holiday festivities. Harry's bride-to-be made a surprise appearance at the Christmas party for the Queen's staff earlier this week, reportedly charming all the guests gathered at Windsor Castle.
It looks like both Markle and Middleton have made good impressions on their royal in-laws, but anyone with a hard-to-please new family knows a single success doesn't necessarily mean the pressure is off. So if you're still sweating—with only nine pre-Christmas shopping days left—follow Kate Middleton's lead and try something from your own family recipe box.
