Kate Upton and Justin Verlander's wedding was pretty spectacular: They tied the knot in the gorgeous Tuscany region of Italy in November 2017, just days after Verlander and his fellow Houston Astros won the World Series. But, as Verlander recently revealed, the most memorable moment of the entire ceremony would've happened no matter where the wedding took place, and whether or not he had just hit the highest point of his entire career.

"It was a very special moment. It was pretty storybook. The moment the gates opened and I saw [Kate] walking down the aisle, I lost it. She looked so beautiful, and I had been looking forward to that day for a long time," the pro athlete told PEOPLE this week. "All the emotions came to me, and it was everything I had imagined it would be and more."

And though Upton, obviously, was the focal point of this magical moment, witnessing it while surrounded by friends and family made it that much sweeter for Verlander. "Being able to look out and see everyone that we love and her walking down the aisle was a very special moment that I'll never forget," he said. "I'm truly blessed to be able to share these experiences with my best friend, and all our close friends and family were there."

While the 35-year-old admitted that winning the World Series and marrying Upton—Brides's current cover girl!—in the span of a week made for back-to-back "life-changing events," married life with the 25-year-old supermodel might give that whirlwind week a run for its money. "Married life's been great. I married my best friend, and we do everything we can to spend as much time together as possible," Verlander told PEOPLE. "Honestly, I couldn't be happier. It's been a lovely first year of marriage."
