Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin's engagement may have come as a complete surprise to the rest of the world, but a new report claims that Justin had actually been planning on popping the question for weeks. Unnamed sources "close to the couple" told TMZ this week that the pop star met with Hailey's dad, Stephen Baldwin, back in June to ask for his blessing before Justin proposed to Hailey. The meeting reportedly happened only a few weeks after Justin and Hailey were first spotted packing on the PDA in Miami, and included a discussion of their shared religious beliefs and values. Stephen, apparently, gave Justin the go-ahead.
It's only fitting that Justin would run his potential proposal by Stephen, since the actor has played a crucial role in Hailey and Justin's relationship since the very beginning. Not only was he the one who facilitated their introductions when they first met in 2009 — watch him carry the conversation while teenage Justin and Hailey awkwardly shake hands in this video of the meeting — but Stephen was also there for the first red carpet photos they took together, at the premiere of Justin's Never Say Never documentary in 2011. Your dad could never!
Stephen also shared his excitement about his daughter's engagement on Sunday, shortly after reports broke that Justin had proposed to Hailey while on vacation in the Bahamas. "Sweet smile on my face ! me&wife (Kennya) Always pray 4 gods will !! He is moving in the hearts of JB&HB. Let's all pray for His will to be done," Stephen wrote in a since-deleted tweet (screenshotted by a quick-thinking Twitter user). "Love you 2 so much !!! #Godstiming #bestisyettocome," he added, also tagging both of Justin's parents.
