John Oliver, host of HBO's Last Week Tonight and America's foremost British guy on late night (sorry, James Corden), has weighed in on the wedding of the year: American actress Meghan Markle's upcoming nuptials with Prince Harry. And he doesn't think Markle is getting such a great deal.
Appearing on The Late Show with former Daily Show costar Stephen Colbert, Oliver remarked, "I would not blame her if she pulled out of this at the last minute....I don't think you need to have just seen the pilot episode of The Crown to get a basic sense of she might be marrying into a family that could cause her some emotional complications."
He's not totally wrong. As anyone who's seen an episode of the Netflix drama series can attest, the Windsors certainly have a complicated history. But Markle's probably watched the show, right? (If your fiancé's family had a Netflix series, you'd binge it.) And in the months leading up to her big day, the royal-to-be has already proved she's ready to take on new fame and responsibilities once she officially ties the knot.
On the topic of the seemingly well-adjusted new generation of royals, Oliver said, "I mean, they are an emotionally stunted group of fundamentally flawed people doing a very silly pseudo job. That's what she's marrying into. So, I hope she likes it. It's going to be weird for her." As for his own royal romance? Well, John Oliver's already married (to an American, actually!), but even if he caught the eye of some princess, "I would not marry into the royal family."
"I'm a commoner. I would not be welcome," he added, seemingly forgetting that both Kate Middleton and Markle don't have royal backgrounds. But he's not totally against the idea of princes getting married. "I like royal weddings.…I also like fireworks. It's a spectacle. It's something nice to look at," he said. Can't argue with that.
