It's not just you—Jessica Chastain doesn't get along with her in-laws, either. Chastain appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday night, where she joked that her in-laws might just "hate" her.

The actress recently spent the holidays in Italy with her husband, Italian fashion executive Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo, her parents, and her in-laws. But since her family doesn't speak Italian and his family doesn't speak English, Chastain admitted that there was a language barrier.

"It's a very quiet holiday, but there's a lot of pointing and a lot of food," she said.

But that wasn't the only thing making the holidays tricky. Chastain told Kimmel that there were also some major differences in terms of meal preferences: Chastain added that Americans eat very quickly, while Italians take their time to enjoy a meal, making a dinner last up to a few hours. Even after a handful of courses, the family would still serve food and expect to eat and enjoy the dinner with each other for a while.

"So I have a trick now that I just push the food around on the plate for four hours," she said.

Furthermore, Chastain added that as a vegan, there were very few options for her at the dairy-and-meat heavy family meals.

"Do you think they hate you? Do you think the family doesn't like you?" Kimmel jokingly asked her.

"Maybe," she quipped. "Maybe that's why it's so quiet."

"It's not that they don't speak English," Kimmel teased back.

"They just hate me," she jokingly said.

The Miss Sloane actress and her hubby tied the knot back in June 2017 after dating for five years. The two wed in Italy, at Passi de Preposulo's family estate, surrounded by dozens of A-list collection of wedding guests—including Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, and Anne Hathaway.
