It was wedding bells on Saturday for Jesse Tyler Ferguson and his partner of nearly three years Justin Mikita, a lawyer. The couple married on Saturday in New York City after a 10-month engagement.
The ceremony came on the heels of the Supreme Court's decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and Proposition 8, which Jesse Tyler commented on via Twitter:
However, the couple had been planning their nuptials long before the Supreme Court's ruling and already made the decision to celebrate in New York City rather than California, where they both reside.
"It wasn't legal in California up until yesterday. Weddings are expensive, y'all, and we wanted to give that money to a state that accepted us as an equal. We're too far down the planning path to change," Jesse Tyler explained on The View the day after the DOMA decision.
In lieu of gifts, the couple requested that their guests donate to a charity they founded called Tie The Knot that advocates for marriage equality nationwide.
The pair posted a couple of short-but-sweet tweets acknowledging their big day:
Nigel Lythgoe, a pal from Jesse Tyler's guest-judging stint on So You Think You Can Dance, and Julie Bowen, a Modern Family co-star, also tweeted their reactions to the heartfelt celebration:
On Monday, Jesse Tyler took to Twitter again to share this photo of the pair's custom wedding cake topper accompanied by the message: "Top of the world. Top of the cake!" The decoration even featured a miniature version of their adorable dog, Leaf!
