"Love Don't Cost a Thing," according to Jennifer Lopez—but a big ol' diamond ring and an onstage proposal certainly help seal the deal! Although she's usually the star of the show, Jennifer Lopez was just the ultimate wingwoman on Sunday, February 26, when she helped two of her backup dancers get engaged during her Las Vegas concert. Here's what went down....
J. Lo's "All I Have" show on Sunday was just business as usual for backup dancer Tera Perez. But little did she know that her sweetie—and fellow dancer—Lake Smits was sitting in the audience with a ring in his pocket and a plan in place. "I had no idea Lake was even in Vegas or at the show at all," Perez later shared with Entertainment Tonight. "He was hiding in the back of the theater watching the entire show alongside my parents, his mom, and sister."
And then the big moment arrived: When the concert began winding down, Smits took the stage and dropped to one knee in front of his bride-to-be. The spotlight was suddenly on the couple as Lopez, her other backup dancers, and—oh, yeah—the huge cheering audience all looked on.
"She said yes!" screamed Lopez as Perez beamed and Smits slipped the engagement sparkler on her hand and the crowd basically lost it. Running up to congratulate the couple, J. Lo hilariously stopped dead in her tracks, realizing that they hadn't even embraced each other yet! But then the trio shared a group hug—with Jennifer freakin' Lopez! — making this one of the coolest proposals ever.
"I love these two!" Lopez told the crowd in a video of the crazy moment that Perez later posted to Instagram. "He's danced with me for many years, Tera's danced for me for so many years. Thank you for letting us have this moment. We love you so much!"
The couple, who met while working on J. Lo's "Dance Again World Tour" in 2012, sound beyond excited about dancing into the next stage of their relationship together. "We are hoping to plan a wedding sometime next year, in 2018, but with the engagement being so new, we are definitely happy enjoying this moment in love and taking it in!" said the bride-to-be.
But while Lopez having a hand in their big day (the woman does have some pretty impressive pipes, and she starred in a movie called The Wedding Planner, for goodness' sake!) is still up in the air, the superstar has definitely scored a spot on the guest list!
"As far as [Lopez] performing at our wedding," she noted, "we would never expect that. She is family to us and we love her, and all that would matter is that she's just there sharing our special day."
