They say true love lasts a lifetime, and as far as Duranord and Jeanne Veillard are concerned, that certainly is true. The Rockland County, New York-based couple is about to hit a major milestone this weekend: Duranord turns 108 on Saturday. But that's not all! The couple is also celebrating a historic 83rd anniversary this year.
Duranord and Jeanne, who turns 105 in May, got married in November 1932. At that time, Franklin Delano Roosevelt had just won his first presidential election. Not that it mattered at the time to the Veillards, who were living in Haiti. They fell in love there and had five children before moving to the U.S. in 1968.
In advance of their Duranord's big birthday, reporters gathered around the couple and their family at their home earlier today. Duranord reportedly happily regaled people with songs and stories as they all enjoyed an early birthday cake. When asked how the duo, who were sweetly patting each other's hands, met back in the day, Jeanne had a sweet answer. "I found him in the street," she joked in French Creole.
With 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, they have a lot of love surrounding them as they looki forward to celebrating another landmark in their life. "Thank you very much," Veillard said to the well-wishers at his house. "Merci beaucoup."
