A sucker for love ... and sweets! Hugh Jackman showed off an adorable throwback pic with his wife of 23 years, Deborrah Furness, on Instagram on Thursday, April 11, that has fans LOLing.
So what’s their secret? According to Jackman, it’s all about being open with each other. “Without a doubt, [honesty] is the most important thing,” the Oscar nominee told People in April. “People talk about intimacy and assume that means in the bedroom. Of course it is that, but really, intimacy is being able to share everything together—good, bad, fears, successes,” he said. “Deb and I had that from the beginning. We’ve always been completely ourselves with each other.”
It also didn’t hurt that the Les Misérables actor and the Shame alum had already cemented their relationship by the time he hit it big. “One of the great pieces of fortune in my career, it started late, but that Deb and I were already set together, a team, madly in love, like literally before it all happened,” Jackman told People in December 2017, noting that his spouse remains his focus at every big career event. “Because that is my foundation, that is the rock, that is the foundation of our family, and therefore my life.”
The Australian native met his love in 1995 after he landed a role on her TV show, Correlli.
He recalled their meet-cute to the magazine as well. “My first job out of drama school—it was a massive break for me. I was really scared,” he recalled. “Deb, she was a big star. I get picked up, and Deb is in the front seat of the car. I’ll never forget. She took off her seatbelt and she turned around and put out her hand and took off her sunglasses and said, ‘Hi, I’m Deborra-lee Furness, nice to meet you.’ I remember thinking, I like this girl.”
In fact, Jackman said he liked his costar so much, it impeded his ability to play it cool—he said he avoided her for a week to try to quell his feelings, which he felt were less than professional. “Deb and I were already best friends, and I realized, ‘I’ve got a crush on my leading lady.’ This is the thing you do not do,” he said.
Luckily for him, he wasn’t alone in his desires. “She said, ‘I noticed you haven’t talked to me in like a week, what’s going on?’ I said, ‘I got a crush on you. I’ll get over it, I’m sorry,” he admitted. “She goes, ‘Oh? Because I’ve got a crush on you too.’ I never in a million years thought she reciprocated.”
Cut to 2019, and the duo are still going strong, enjoying the little things ... together. As Jackman told People in April, “Going to our country house, lighting a fire at night and roasting marshmallows is my favorite thing to do.”
