Thinking about proposing? The only person who might be even more excited than your significant other is her mom! Whether the two of you have been looking at rings together or you know her mom can keep a secret, your girlfriend’s mom just might be the best partner in crime you could ask for. After all, she might know your girlfriend and her style better than anyone! Our experts have a few tips for how to include her mom in the process.
If you have no idea where to start, invite your girlfriend’s mom along when you start looking at engagement rings. She has known your girlfriend her whole life, after all, so she’ll be able to give you extra insight into the styles that your girlfriend might love. But before you head to the store, you should set some ground rules.
The first is your budget. If you’re comfortable talking about money with her mom, put the number out there so neither of you gets carried away and picks something too expensive. Would you rather keep that private? Let the jeweler know what you’re working with so he or she can steer you toward rings that you can afford. Then, after you’ve picked a ring, your girlfriend’s mom can step out of the room while you and the jeweler go over the final details.
The second thing to discuss in advance is any hints you’ve gotten from your girlfriend, as well as your personal style preferences. Would she love a halo setting? Are you partial to emerald and princess cuts? Narrow down what you’re looking at (as well as what you don’t want to look at!) or you’ll be faced with endless options and nowhere to begin.
The third is how much input you actually want. You may involve her mom from start to finish, or might want the ring you choose to be a surprise. If you’d prefer the latter, have her help you narrow down the options, then make the final decision on your own.
When it’s time to shop, get Mom’s input on which stores she thinks might have a selection her daughter will love. Even if you’re going the custom route and already know a jeweler you’d like to work with, shopping in an actual store will help you see what you do and don’t like in person. Ask her (or a female associate at the store) to try different rings on, since they look VERY different on a hand than they do in the case, and take notes or pictures. Then start narrowing it down!
