There’s a legend that says weddings are a great place to be single, since you never know who you might meet (and they’re already vetted by your mutual friend!). But is that myth actually true? It turns out hook ups (and lasting relationships) are more common occurrences at weddings than we thought. Start working on those table assignments for optimal match-making!
The best way to know if weddings are actually a hook up breeding ground is to ask the single guests themselves, which is exactly what the team at dating site Plenty of Fish did. They polled 3,000 users in the U.S. between the ages of 21 and 65, and the results may surprise you.
According to the survey, 44.2% of respondents said weddings are a good place for singles to hook up. Why? More than half said it’s easy to start a conversation, while others (21%) noted that everyone looks their best, 14.8% said it's because the drinks are flowing (hello, open bar...), and 7.8% said it's because there’s no commitment required (you’ll probably never see each other again, right?). And of course, love is in the air!
18% of users have hooked up at a wedding (and a cheeky 6.3% prefer not to say), and most of those hook ups happened at the wedding of a friend. You’ve got a friend in common and you know that guest list was very carefully considered, so we’ll call that a seal of approval...
So when you sit down to work on that guest list, keep these stats in mind. You may not be playing match-maker intentionally, but you never know when sparks might fly (15.7% of respondents went on to have a relationship with someone they met at a wedding, by the way!). We may be over the “singles table,” but that won’t stop them!
