If you're getting married at a rustic wedding venue, like a farm or barn, it is the perfect opportunity to incorporate more homespun details into your celebration. But would hay bales for seating be comfortable for your guests? Are they an attractive nuisance, or is there a way to make them cozy in addition to festive? Our wedding etiquette experts are here to answer your destination wedding questions in our daily post.
Our wedding ceremony venue is very rustic and we were thinking of using hay bales for seating instead of chairs. Will guests be comfortable?
We love the idea of using hay bales for a rustic outdoor ceremony, it is such a unique twist on traditional seating. But keep in mind that hay bales are not as comfortable as chairs, so it is important to keep your ceremony as short as possible (ideally under 20 minutes). Cover the hay bales with a sturdy fabric, like the Mexican blankets pictured above, so that guests don't get poked or sit on an uneven surface. And have several chairs on hand for elderly guests and others who might need a chair back. However, if your ceremony is going to be quite warm, you might want to opt for chairs, instead—the hay bales will be uncomfortable in the sweltering heat. Also, if you or some guests have hay allergies, you may want to think twice. Rustic wooden benches with some comfy cushions on top might have the same effect, without any of those inconveniences!
