Ask a newlywed the happiest moment of her first year of marriage, and you might expect her to share an intimate memory from their wedding day. But it turns out that little, everyday delights top even epic moments — such as a first look — for these five brides. Here, they share their happiest moments in year one.
"For me, it was the moment we returned home from our honeymoon," says one bride. "As we walked through the door, knowing all the craziness was over and real life was going to begin, it really sunk in that we were married. That was such a good feeling."
"One night, soon after we got married, I invited my husband's parents over for dinner. My mother-in-law very subtly started picking apart the meal I had made,"
says another married woman, "but my husband jumped to my defense, and basically told her that she was being disrespectful and she needed to stop. Knowing I wouldn't have to go through the next 40 years nodding along to her nitpicking was a very happy moment."
"The first day we went back to work, my husband came home with a bouquet of flowers for me," says one newlywed. "It was a romantic gesture that made me so happy because I realized that he wouldn't stop surprising me just because we were married."
"When my husband introduced me as his wife for the first time, I was giddy," says another woman. "It's one of those moments where it really hits you that you're married. Plus, hearing him introduce me that way filled me with this sense of pride I'm not sure I can describe. But wow, it felt good."
"I don't think there was one single defined moment that was the best in our first year," says another newlywed. "When I look back on it, what makes me happiest are the times I felt like I had a real partner, whether that was negotiating the delivery of our first couch with a particularly prickly salesperson or navigating the crowded mall on Christmas Eve together when we realized we'd forgotten a present for his sister."
