Pro tip: When you ask someone to record your marriage proposal, give them explicit directions on how you want the moment shot. Make sure they know when you want them to start recording, what angle you want them to stand at, and most importantly, ask them to actually get you in the video. This sweet grandpa didn’t quite get the memo when he recorded a couple’s proposal—with the camera facing toward him the whole time.

John Hart met the soon-to-be engaged California couple (whose names weren't shared) while riding the Sandia Peak Tramway near Albuquerque, New Mexico, with his grandson Jaime Hart and Jamie’s friend Jayce Flauding.

Hart senior told local news station KOB4 that when the soon-to-be engaged man introduced his girlfriend, Hart said "‘Wow hey, this would be a great chance for you to propose to your girlfriend and put a big smile on her face.' And unbeknownst to me, that was the plan.”

The now newly engaged couple actually enlisted Flauding to record the proposal, but he ended up handing the phone off to Hart, a former Navy photographer.

Unfortunately, Hart didn't realize that he had the camera turned toward his own face instead of at the couple. While the video has no footage of the proposal, it does include Hart's sweet reaction.

“Oh, that’s so cool,” he says in the video after letting out an infectious "Aww." Throughout the video you can hear the rest of the crowd cheering and congratulating the couple.

The beautiful moment quickly turned comedic when everyone realized Hart had actually been recording himself. “You Turkey!” he shouted in the video. Oh, Grandpa.

“I thought I could handle this,” Hart told KOB4. “Well, unbeknownst to me, I’m taping myself.”

Luckily, another onlooker captured a recording that includes the proposal, but we’d have to imagine Hart's video takes the cake.
