According to People, the Ocean's Eleven alum spoke to Australia's Who magazine while promoting his latest project—the Hulu series Catch 22—and dished on his potential relationship to Baby Sussex. "Oh yes, I’ll be the godfather of the royals apparently," he told Who with a laugh, followed by a quick, "No!"
But Clooney does pose a completely valid reason for not pouncing on the undertaking—his hands are currently tied with his own busy family life after wife Amal gave birth to children Ella and Alexander in June 2017. "I’m the father of twins, I have enough sh*t to deal with—literally!" he added. Noted.
While the 57-year-old actor may be eliminated from the potential godparent list, know that multiple spots still remain open for the role. Yep, royal tots typically tote a lengthy list of godmothers and godfathers, and Meghan and Harry's baby will surely follow suit. (For reference, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis each have seven, five, and six godparents, respectively.)
Still speaking to Who, Clooney went on to defend the future royal mother, comparing the present media mistreatment of her to that of Harry's late mother, Princess Diana. "I do want to say, they’re just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere, she’s been pursued and vilified," he said of the press. "She’s a woman who is seven months pregnant and she has been pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was, and it's history repeating itself. We’ve seen how that ends."
He also referenced the emotional leaked note that Meghan penned to her estranged father, Thomas Markle. "I can’t tell you how frustrating that is, just seeing them broadcast a letter from a daughter to a father, she’s getting a raw deal there, and I think it’s irresponsible and I’m surprised by that."
Although Clooney won't be stepping in for godfather duty anytime soon, he clearly already knows a thing or two about having a royal friend's back.
