Just as George and Amal Clooney are nearing their first wedding anniversary as husband and wife, the actor made a very special appearance as Stephen Colbert's first guest on his debut episode as host of The Late Show Tuesday night — and, much to our delight, opened up about his new wife and their life together.
Colbert prodded the leading man about his marriage, to which Clooney — who married the British human rights lawyer in a star-studded Italian wedding at Venice's Aman Canal Grande Hotel in September 2014 — joked, "They said it wouldn't last."
Colbert then followed up on the actor's marriage by asking Clooney what it's like to be "the arm candy" in the relationship. "Because she's a very serious person. She must say, 'We're going to meet some extremely intelligent people tonight,'" the Late Show host explained.
Clooney joked: "[I feel] shiny and pretty. That's mostly what I do now."
Colbert gave the two-time Oscar winner a belated wedding present — from Tiffany no less! — but not without noting that the funnyman did not receive an invitation to the nuptials. Clooney opened the iconic blue box, which contained an engraved paperweight reading, "I don't know you."
"That's just to remind you that we don't know each other," said Colbert, adding he didn't want to "do the celebrity thing" and pretend they are friends in real life.
The Clooneys will just have to invite Colbert and his wife on one of their famed date nights to continue this new friendship!
