We know it’s weird to get attached to moisturizer, but we can’t help ourselves. Our winter routine included dipping our greedy little fingers generously into decadent tubs of rich, heavy-duty creams that worked wonders for our dry skin—so much so that it’s hard to give them up. I mean, is it really a problem to keep using this throughout the rest of the year, even if we aren’t prone to oily skin? Short answer? Yes. Yes, it is.
“When the weather gets warmer, everyone should always reevaluate their skin care routine, no matter the skin type,” says Erin Gilbert, M.D., Vichy Consulting Dermatologist. “The tendency to sweat and accumulate more oil can definitely cause breakouts if you keep using a heavy moisturizer.” While this is especially important for oily or breakout-prone skin, it’s something everyone should be conscious of, especially leading up to a wedding.
Luckily, when we reluctantly decided to heed Dr. Gilbert’s advice, we were met with a slew of awesome new options—light, gel-like moisturizers that use super simple ingredients such as water are trending right now, guys.
Here’s why that’s important: The simpler the ingredients (aka more water and fewer oil- and silicone-based ingredients), the less havoc it wreaks on your skin. Makes sense, right? Therefore, these kinds of formulas are a perfect switch from a heavier cream, ensuring that you won’t go through any skin irritation or breakout period (read: no clogged pores!) as your skin adjusts to the new moisturizer. It’s also the best choice to swap into any skin-care or makeup regimen, since it’s gentle enough to work with pretty much anything. Look for water and hyaluronic acid for your new light summer product.
“Just in case, it’s best to change your skin-care routine at least six weeks before a big event to give your skin time to acclimate,” says Dr. Gilbert.
Oh, one last thing—most makeup artists actually prefer for you to apply a lighter, simpler moisturizer on the day of your wedding, just to avoid flaking. If another layer is needed when you arrive, they’ll prep you with more or apply a primer to make your makeup look even and last all day. Bonus: Gel-based moisturizers tend to have a more matte effect, which helps to reduce shine for your photos.
