Phanomrat, who runs the popular YouTube channel and blog "Just Eat Life" with her now-fiancé, Leo Samanamud, took to Insta on June 9 to celebrate their engagement status. The snapshot, which the duo both posted to their personal accounts, features the all-smiles pair posing together outside, with Phanomrat holding up her left hand to flash her new bridal bling—a simple gold bauble with a small pearl. "9 years later, I said YES to my best friend!" she captioned the post.
It seems Phanomrat's fiancé hit the nail on the head, because she admitted the ring suited her style perfectly. "He knew exactly what type of ring I’d love," Phanomrat told Yahoo Lifestyle. "A delicate, hammered gold ring with a tiny pearl. I don’t usually wear any jewelry, but when I do, it’s simple and minimal."
Samanamud also added a sentimental factor to the jewel, as well. "What mattered to me the most was the tiny detail on the inside of the ring," Phanomrat said. "He asked the ring maker to inscribe the initials of our nicknames for each other. I swear I thought I was floating in the air when he pointed it out. My heart smiles every time I see it."
While numerous fans wished the couple well via Instagram comments, unfortunately not everyone shared Phanomrat's excitement over the minimalist ring. The couple was surprised at the amount of comments critiquing the size of the bauble.
It seems Phanomrat has since deleted all notes on the post and disabled the comment feature, but US Weekly reports that users left criticism like, "So are we all going to pretend like that ring isn’t microscopically small?" Another wrote, "Congrats! Where’s the ring?” One Instagram user went so far as to say, "It must suck to wait 9 years for a ring that look like that," according to Yahoo. A female influencer even turned the ring selfie into a meme, writing, "Ladies, would you accept the ring and say yes?" over the photo.
While Phanomrat couldn't have predicted the negative backlash, she was even more shocked that so many of the hateful comments came from women.
"I’ve always been an advocate for women supporting women, so I was shocked to see so many females wasting their time replying to each other to dampen our happy moment," she said. "I deleted many comment threads to ease the cycles of hate speech. What I couldn’t remove were the memes that people created and shared on Snapchat and Instagram."
Phanomrat, who said she's experienced her fair share of Internet trolls, came back with the perfect response to her ring critics.
"What Leo and I do want those people to know is that we mostly choose experiences over material things, and we encourage others to think about how they measure value in life," she said. "We made it our priority to travel around the world, eat bucket list foods, and experience dream adventures together. That’s all we’ve ever wanted and will continue to do, ring or no ring."
Less is truly more with this beautiful bauble, and we're glad the negative feedback hasn't seemed to dampen Jen Phanomrat and Leo Samanamud's engagement. Congrats to the happy couple, and we're already fantasizing the wedding menu these foodies will whip up together.
