Pop the champagne and break out the hot dog buns (eight to be exact, please); it’s time to party! George Newbern, who starred in 1991’s remake of Father of the Bride (a.k.a. pretty much the best wedding film of all time—there, we said it) and its 1995 sequel, just revealed that a third movie script for the franchise actually exists. Father of the Bride III?! OMG!
Newbern may now be starring on ABC's Scandal, but he’ll always be Bryan MacKenzie to us. (Don’t even ask, “Who’s Bryan?”) And it sounds like Newbern may be reprising that role in the '90s film franchise. “[Director] Charles Shyer wrote a script. I know there’s a script out there. And there’s talk,” Newbern recently told Us Weekly of Father of the Bride III. “I don’t know how far it got, but I’m sure most of the cast would be into it if the script was right. So maybe that’s just a question of that happening.”
So while a third film is hardly a definite thing, according to Newbern, it’s definitely a possibility. “I have heard some [concepts] and they are pretty far out there,” the actor continued. “From what I heard it was pretty good and different and newsworthy.”
Newbern even has some ideas for his character! “I think Bryan MacKenzie would probably be a grandfather now,” he mused. “They had a kid so he’s probably got a grandkid at this point, I think. Or at least close to it. Or his daughter would be getting married. He’s probably invested in a startup in the Silicon Valley because they are on the West Coast. And they probably live up in the Bay area. They got four kids. They need to shoot a third one. We need to do a third one. That would be great.”
We think fans of the film would definitely second that! In fact, we wouldn’t blame them if they started racing to the theater now. Just drive carefully. And don’t forget to fasten your condom.
