On October 15, the couple boarded an AirAsia flight from Perth, Australia to Bali. But only 25 minutes after takeoff, the plane began to rapidly descend—dropping nearly 30,000 to 10,000 feet in less than 10 minutes. Thanks to panicked crew members, dropping oxygen masks, and the fear of impending fatalities, Jeanes had all the adrenaline he needed to propose to his girlfriend on the spot.
“Luckily she said yes,” Jeanes told NBC News shortly after the incident. “We both reconfirmed with each other when we were on the ground.”
Though the engaged couple and the rest of the passengers made it off the plane safely, some of the passengers have criticized the flight attendants' behavior during the emergency. One passenger said that the attendants were "screaming their heads off."
Another passenger added, "I actually picked up my phone and sent a text message to my family, just hoping that they would get it. It was horrible."
“We commend our pilots for landing the aircraft safely and complying with standard operating procedure,” AirAsia Group head of safety Captain Ling Liong Tien told NBC. “We are fully committed to the safety of our guests and crew and we will continue to ensure that we adhere to the highest safety standards.”
Hopefully this couple has a little more luck on their honeymoon.
