In Hollywood, there are plenty of couples who put it all out there (we’re looking at you, Kristin Cavallari and Jay Culter!). Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling, however, are most definitely not one of those couples.
The twosome, who share daughters Esmerelda, four, and Amanda, two, are famously private. But Mendes, 45, was apparently feeling so in love with Gosling, 38, she couldn’t hold it in any longer. The actress opened up about her partner in a new interview with Women’s Health on Tuesday, April 16.
When asked how she went from a big-time movie star to a mother of two, Mendes revealed that meeting the First Man actor changed everything for her. “Ryan Gosling happened,” she laughed. “I mean, falling in love with him. Then it made sense for me to have…not kids, but his kids. It was very specific to him.”
She also revealed a moment with Gosling that she holds dear: When he won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for La La Land in 2017—and used his big moment to remember her late brother, Juan Carlos Mendez.
“While I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer,” Gosling said during his acceptance speech. “Sweetheart, thank you … if I may, I’d like to dedicate this to the memory of her brother.”
“It was like a dream,” Mendes, who wasn’t watching at the time, told the magazine. “But really, what I heard was that he said my brother’s name. It was the most beautiful gesture, and I had no idea Ryan was going to say it. Losing my brother was incredibly difficult.”
Gosling also raved over his love later that year: He told GQ in December 2016 that she was everything he could ever want in a partner. “Eva's the dream mother, and they're dream babies, and it's like a dream that I'm having right now. I'm dreaming it all,” he quipped. “So I feel so lucky.”
The duo met while filming 2012’s The Place Beyond the Pines and tied the knot in 2011. They welcomed their first child together in 2014, with a second following in 2016.
Though Mendes told Women's Health she would likely return to acting at some point, for now, she’s enjoying just being mom—out of the public eye. “I feel more ambitious in the home right now than I do in the workplace," she said.
Hey, with a family like that, we can’t say we blame her!
