Etsy may be all about selling unique, personalized goods, but there's actually loads more we can gain from the site than monogrammed coasters—especially when it comes to what brides all over the globe are searching for. And for the first time ever, the e-commerce website is releasing its Trend Guide, which this month focuses on what's trending in weddings and where a bride can find (and purchase) these items on Etsy, essentially making wedding planning a total breeze. Ok, so maybe not that easy, but it'll get you off the DIY hook if you're not exactly a pro calligrapher. Phew! So, without further ado, we present to you the top wedding trends of 2017, Etsy-style.
Gone are the days of bridal white, and in are the days of wedding dresses created in a spectrum of colors, including ivory, champagne, blush, and even pastel blue. According to Etsy's Trend Guide, "More and more, design-minded brides are opting to grab the spotlight in colorful gowns—and even patterned pieces—and dress their bridesmaids in white instead. The uniform backdrop of solid-white bridesmaids' dresses ensures that nothing will distract from the bride's big statement—and keeps the color palette from getting too complicated." While white wedding dresses were once a sign of purity, it's clear that brides are looking for gowns that better represent who they are. In fact, 11 percent of brides prioritize finding a gown that's unique. Why stand in when you can stand out?
Gemstone Engagement Rings
Millennials these days are placing an emphasis more on experiences than on luxury, so it makes total sense that they're purchasing gemstone engagement rings rather than their more expensive diamond counterparts. "On Etsy, searches for 'alternative engagement rings' have hit an all-time high, as couples increasingly seek out hued gemstones over something more traditional," the report states. "From iridescent opals to bold emeralds, colorful gemstones allow couples to fully express their personal style—while also saving money."
While we're generally a fan of welcome bags at Brides, it seems many aren't. Why? Because they're tedious and sometimes expensive work. Thankfully, a new wedding trend has emerged to take their place. Enter the gifting lounge. According to Etsy, this is how it works: "Upon arrival at the couple's hotel, a welcome party, or even the reception itself, guests can grab a personalized tote or other container and help themselves to a curated spread of memorable goodies." This process takes out the middleman, a.k.a. your bridesmaids, and ensures your guests get exactly what they want to take home—and nothing that they don't. You can stock your gifting lounge with anything you'd like, really, but personalized items are key. Think of something that connects both you and the groom together and go from there. We personally love these adorable jam jars (above) found on Etsy.
Going Beyond the Photo Booth
Ah, the wedding photo booth. How we, and many drunken guests, have adored you. While we're sure the photo booth isn't going anywhere (for now, at least), we are excited to see that brides and grooms are incorporating a different kind of tangible experience into their wedding day. "Couples are pushing the personalized-souvenir idea one very big step forward by arranging for illustrators, calligraphers, and artists to create original works for guests in person, on-site." How does this fit in with the e-commerce site? "With sellers around the globe, Etsy is the perfect place to connect with a local artist to create those day-of unique touches." Bellissimo!
Back to (Matte) Black
Brides hosting a black-tie affair will probably be pretty excited to hear that matte black is officially back. Perfect when paired with a glittery gold finish, the color seems to have originally emerged from the rustic chalkboard craze of yore. But today, "the softer, muted matte hue gets a modern makeover and moves from background standby to a signature shade in its own right." Try it out on your wedding invites or table numbers for an elegant, ultrachic touch.
Bridesmaids' Suits and Jumpers
This trend isn't exactly coming out of Etsy's 2017 report, but rather it's the site's biggest 2018 wedding prediction. According to Dayna Isom Johnson, Etsy's resident trend expert, "2018 will officially be the year of the wedding dress alternative—and not just for the bride herself. The whole wedding party is getting in on it: Working with shapes from the tuxedo-inspired to the romper-ish, everyone from the bride to the flower girl can skip the skirt and still stand out." It seems like Pantsuit Nation is making an impact not only in the political realm but the wedding world as well! And believe us, we're so into it.
