The wedding planners at Buckingham Palace have officially asked Sheeran to perform at the royal wedding ceremony in May, Entertainment Tonight reports. Considering his music is already a mainstay on almost every wedding reception playlist ever, it's no surprise that he was tapped to serenade the royal couple IRL. The Grammy winner has yet to (publicly) reply to the reported invitation, so we might have to wait until May 19th to find out how he RSVPs.
In December, Sheeran joked to ET that he'd play the ceremony "if [he] was free," noting that people constantly wonder if he and Prince Harry—who both happen to be redheaded Brits—are friendly. "I get asked this all the time like I know the royal family. I've met Harry once!" he said. "[And] that was in 2011 at his gran's Jubilee, and it was like, 'Hey.' 'Hey.' I barely know him!" But it looks like he may be in for a second meeting come this spring.
TBD which of Sheeran's dozens of romantic ballads will make the cut for the royal couple's first dance, though "Thinking Out Loud" and "Perfect" seem to be the obvious choices—especially if Beyoncé is willing to make an appearance for the duet version of the latter (Queen Bey—are you listening?!). Sheeran previously revealed that his all-time favorite wedding song is Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl," a soulful cover of which would also be a fitting choice for the bride-to-be.
The royal wedding isn't the only wedding the singer will be preparing for this year. The 26-year-old recently announced his engagement to Cherry Seaborn, who he's known since high school and, as he recently revealed in a video for Billboard, started dating at Taylor Swift's 2015 Fourth of July party. "Got myself a fiancé just before new year. We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well xx," he wrote in an Instagram post in January. He's also shared that Seaborn was the inspiration behind the song "Perfect," which is, well, perfect.
