Technically speaking, Ed Sheeran has been at practically every wedding these past few years via his crooning voice through the speakers as the couple takes their first spin on the reception dance floor. But it sounds like there is one particular wedding on the horizon that Ed Sheeran might attend IRL. And, of course, it isn’t any old wedding—it’s the royal wedding. That’s right: Ed Sheeran might actually perform at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding. (As if these two weren’t lucky enough, amiright?)
The royal wedding date is set for May 2018, and the venue (St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle) is all squared away. But there are still a ton of details to attend to before the big day. Like, what will Meghan Markle’s wedding dress look like? (We already have some predictions...) Will Princess Charlotte and Prince George be itty bitty bridal party members? And, of course, we're already wondering who will perform at the reception. With a wedding this big, these nuptials are going to need a positively princely performer. And that just might be the reigning Duke of First Dances, Ed Sheeran.
The singer was actually just honored at Buckingham Palace in London this week, where he was made a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire—a royal honor given by Prince Charles on behalf of the queen for Sheeran’s “services to music and charity,” according to Clarence House’s Twitter statement. So basically, he already has an in with the monarchy.
According to Us Weekly, after accepting his royal honor, Sheeran spoke with reporters who asked if he would be performing at Prince Harry and Meghan’s nuptials—a question to which the singer replied with a casual “Yeah, why not?” Don’t act too excited there, Ed.
The “Thinking Out Loud” crooner commented earlier this month on the impending royal wedding, saying that he would perform if he was “free.”
“I get asked this all the time like I know the royal family. I’ve met Harry once!” he told Entertainment Tonight. “[And] that was in 2011 at his gran’s Jubilee.…I barely know him!”
But just so you know, Prince Harry and Meghan, it sounds like Ed’s available!
