Eat, Pray, Love, the iconic soul-searching memoir by author Elizabeth Gilbert, became an instant hit as a book, and an even bigger success as a feature film. Starring Julia Roberts as "Liz" Gilbert, viewers (and readers) tag along on her journey to finding herself, and happiness, after a breakdown, a breakup, and everything in between.
As she travels across the world, she experiences new cultures, cuisine, religion, men, and ultimately, a happy ending. If you’re feeling inspired by Gilbert’s true story of experiencing the world in her own way, grab your new spouse and your passport, and follow our true-to-the-timeline itinerary for the honeymoon of a lifetime.
Your trip across the world begins in the Eternal City of Love, Rome, which is home to much of the “eating” as referenced in the title. So, embrace your inner carb-o-holic and indulge (lots) of local and fresh pastas, pizzas, seafood, and gelato. (You can recreate the jeans-buttoning scene later, or, bring stretch pants.)
An excellent lodging option is the Hotel Manfredi Suite, located in the heart of history. Nestled in a historic 17th century building and only steps away from the Spanish Steps, you’ll be in a prime location for exploring Italia. Or, for a truly authentic experience, you can alternatively opt to call one of the ample Airbnb options home during your stay.
Along your food tour, must-stops include San Crispino Gelato (there’s one near the Trevi Fountain!) where Liz indulges in the sweet frozen treat in the book, and Pizzarium conveniently located right near the Vatican Museum's entrance, where you can savor their iconic tomato and oregano pizza. As you stroll along tasting, be sure to check out traditional sightseeing musts like The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, too.
After your 8.5-hour flight to the capital area of India, you’ll first want to get some rest. For a luxury stay, check in to the LaLit New Delhi, a 5-star hotel located within the Connaught Place district. Enjoy a traditional meal at the hotel’s Baluchi, offering all of the colorful and spiced treats you’d hope to enjoy, including a Naanery Bread Bar.
To take more of a “wellness” route, check out Ananda in the Himalayans, within Northern India. An authentic yet upscale wellness destination, you will be assessed by an Ayurvedic doctor, and a program will be developed for you based on your needs. From yoga to treatments, meditation, swimming and more, you and your spouse will emerge well-rested, and hopefully “awakened,” much like Liz.
In the film, Liz visited the Ashram Hari Mandir, in Pataudi, and it’s a pivotal place where she “finds” herself (India is the “Pray” portion of the journey). On a day trip, drive out to this gorgeous 25-acre campus, home to a stunning temple and dormitories, as well as a school, and a home for the elderly, and follow in her footsteps. While staying in the New Delhi or Delhi area, other top sights to experience include The Red Fort, the main street of Chandi Cowk, and the Bahai Temple.
For your final stop, you’ll head to Bali, for the “Love” leg of your trip. One of the most famous islands within the archipelago of Indonesia, Bali, will be the center focus of your excursion as you trace Liz’s steps. In the film, she stays in an adorable open-walled Balinese-style villa, but for your honeymoon accommodations, opt for the Samkhya Villas, in Ubud.
Along your travels, a must-stop (and must-shop) are what’s called the Markets of Bali. These iconic flea and street markets, like the Sindhu Market, are reminiscent of the film's crowded street scenes, and authentically lively. After shopping, grab your bicycles (complete with a handy basket, of course) and take your own romantic cycling tour of the island.
If you’d like, you can visit the Ketut Liyer House, and hope for a chance to spend some time or treatment with the now famous traditional healer himself. And, complete your honeymoon with some romantic R&R at Padang Padang Beach in Pecatu. Not only were the movie's beach scenes filmed here, but it’s 110 meters of white sandy beaches gorgeous blule waters and ample surf spots make it a great final stop for some quality time with your love.
