Brides beauty columnist Drew Barrymore — actress, producer, and founder of Flower Beauty — is here to answer your questions. This time, she's covering the secret behind her flawless skin, how to tone up for the big day without losing weigh, and how to style your hair during that awkward growing out process.
__Q: You always look great on the red carpet. Have any special skin-care secrets or rituals that you do before a big event? __
First of all, thank you! My number-one thing is that I put a ton of moisturizer and let it sink in for 10 to 15 minutes before I apply my makeup. That way, I'm always working a nice dewy glow. I also use a highlighter like Flower's Glisten Up! — specifically designed to catch the light. After I've done all my makeup, I put powder on my nose, forehead, and chin. (Nobody wants to look dewy there!) I use an Evian mister though out the day to "wake up" my makeup and keep everything fresh (avoiding the eyes so I don't make my mascara run). And I always carry a good lip balm, like Aquaphor.
Q: I don't want to lose weight for my wedding, but I do want to tone up. Any exercises you'd suggest?
I recommend yoga for two reasons: 1) It can elongate your muscles, which makes you look and feel better in your clothes. And 2) yoga's fringe benefit is that it's reflective and meditative. Wedding can be so busy, busy, busy! You can lose your sense of inner calm. Regulating your breathing and dreaming about your future are a great way to be your best on your big day. Namaste! (Just kidding.)
Q: I'm growing my hair out for my wedding, but I'm in the awkward middle phase, and I have all these pre-wedding events (engagement party, shower). What are your go-to styles to beat the growing-it-out blahs?
On my actual wedding day, I was still in the middle of growing my hair out, so I get it. What I did was put it in a simple topknot, but I added a really pretty floral jeweled comb to make it look and feel special. I like a bun because it's classic and gets your hair off your face. And if you putt it up at the right angle for your face, it will be really flattering. As an alternative, you can stick in a few extensions for more length.
